Without learning is inert – lifeless. Knowledge is motionless. Learning does not occur. Student Engagement: a learners investment in and connectedness to a topic. Whether is be mastering a level on a video game, conquering an imaginary Lego land, or figuring out how to carry the one in basic subtraction.
Without attention to the task, commitment to the problem, or investment in the process – learning can not occur.
That is why student engagement is 100% the most important variable in learning.

What is Student Engagement?
The scientists, the philosophers, and the learning theorists all have their own version of Wikipedia’s answer to this question. We keep it simple:
Student Engagement is the investment a student makes in learning.
It can show up in a variety of ways:
- passion for a topic
- frustration with a problem
- curiosity during an inquiry
- dedication to getting it right
- trying again after a mistake
- working hard
- participating in class
- talking about a question
…and the list goes all.
Stanford University prefers a more wordy definition:

Consider using the strategies below to help students increase their engagement with learning activities, build confidence in their community of learning, and increase their comprehension of the course material.
